Backstage Report: AEW Adjusts Kenny Omega’s Direction Amid Health Concerns

Kenny Omega’s long-awaited return to AEW television on October 1 came with both triumph and turbulence on Dynamite. After four weeks away following a brutal assault by Kyle Fletcher, The Cleaner stepped back into the spotlight, teaming with Brodido to score a victory over Josh Alexander and The Young Bucks.

But celebration quickly turned to chaos. Andrade El Idolo shocked the AEW faithful with his return, blindsiding Omega and aligning himself with the ever-dangerous Don Callis Family. The moment signaled a dramatic shift in direction for Omega’s immediate future.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW had originally penciled in a singles showdown between Omega and Fletcher, a natural payoff to the attack that sidelined him. However, concerns about Omega’s health reportedly led officials to delay the match. Rather than risk a physically demanding clash, AEW pivoted by inserting Andrade into the mix.

Omega’s health has been a recurring story in recent years. In 2024, he battled diverticulitis, and ongoing wear-and-tear from decades at the highest level continue to limit how much he can take on. AEW now seems intent on carefully balancing Omega’s workload—keeping him in the spotlight without putting his body under unnecessary risk.

🗣️ Wrestling.news | Backstage Take

AEW booking Kenny Omega against Andrade instead of Kyle Fletcher is a smart move that reflects both caution and creativity. Fans have been hungry for Omega’s return, but the company clearly knows that protecting its top star is more important than rushing into a match that could set him back. Andrade’s surprise return gives AEW a fresh storyline while buying Omega time to heal. Expect fireworks, but maybe not the grueling 30-minute classics Omega is famous for—at least not yet. This is about longevity, not short-term shock value.
