Why The American Nightmare Still Holds a Grudge Against AEW

Cody Rhodes has opened up about the real reason he walked away from AEW — and it wasn’t just business. It was personal.

In a new clip from The Bill Simmons Podcast, Rhodes revealed the emotional weight behind his shocking 2022 departure from AEW. While fans have long speculated about contract issues, creative control, or his reluctance to turn heel, Rhodes made it clear: he felt disrespected in a company he helped create.

“If I ever felt disrespected in WWE, that’s one thing… But being disrespected at something I built with my friends? I wouldn’t stand for it,” Rhodes admitted.

Rhodes, one of the original Executive Vice Presidents of AEW, helped launch the company alongside The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega back in 2019. But after three years — and growing tension behind the scenes — he left for WWE, making a triumphant return at WrestleMania 38.

Rhodes didn’t name names, but he made it crystal clear that he felt underappreciated, and hinted that those inside AEW didn’t grasp the depth of his contributions.

“I did way more here than you think — and you’re gonna find out the moment I’m out the door.”

Today, as the face of WWE and reigning Undisputed Champion, Rhodes says his success speaks for itself. And while he still has love for AEW, the sting of betrayal clearly hasn’t faded.

🧠 MainEvent.News | Backstage Take:

Cody’s comments are more than just venting — they’re a calculated shot across the bow. It’s rare for a top WWE star to publicly air this level of emotion about a rival promotion, but Rhodes isn’t holding back. This adds even more intrigue to any future WWE vs. AEW crossover dreams… if those bridges aren’t completely burned.
