Major SummerSlam Shake-Up: Backstage Chaos Alters WWE's Two-Night Mega Card

Major SummerSlam Shake-Up: Backstage Chaos Alters WWE's Two-Night Mega Card

With just weeks to go before the highly anticipated two-night WWE SummerSlam 2025, the card remains anything but final. Behind the curtain, plans are shifting rapidly — thanks to untimely injuries, creative pivots, and some last-minute reshuffling that’s thrown WWE’s biggest summer event into controlled chaos.

While marquee matches like GUNTHER vs. CM Punk and John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes are locked in as the respective main events for Night 1 and Night 2, new reports suggest that other originally planned bouts have quietly been pulled or reworked. According to Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer, the lineup has seen more than a few shakeups.

🚨 Tag Teams, Tables & Sudden Swerves

One of the more surprising adjustments involves Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss. What was originally planned as a high-stakes singles showdown between two top-tier women’s stars has now morphed into a tag team alliance.

“The original idea was they’d feud right away,” Meltzer explained. “But the chemistry was there, so they’re delaying the split.”

Meltzer compares the pivot to WWE’s RK-Bro formula — a long-term slow-burn pairing that builds chemistry before eventually imploding into a feud. The decision suggests WWE is in no rush to pull the trigger on Flair vs. Bliss, opting instead to stretch the storyline and let the tension simmer.

👑 Roman Reigns Plans Pulled & Pivoted

Originally, Roman Reigns was supposed to face Bron Breakker in a blockbuster singles match, while Jey Uso would battle Bronson Reed. But with Reigns’ return to Raw and the complex booking around his protected status, WWE may pivot to a tag team match instead.

“If you do Roman vs. Bronson, you either need a DQ or pin Roman — which they don’t want,” Meltzer said. “But in a tag match, you can pin Bronson and protect the Tribal Chief.”

The long-term plan, according to insiders, is still Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins, but Rollins' knee injury has placed that dream match on hold for now.

SummerSlam 2025 was supposed to be a celebration — two nights of dream matches, full-throttle storytelling, and legacy-defining moments. But as always in WWE, the card is subject to change — and this year, it’s been changing daily. Injuries to stars like Liv Morgan and Seth Rollins, plus the need to protect major players like Reigns, have left creative scrambling to maintain momentum. With high-profile tag matches now being used to delay one-on-one showdowns, the question remains: will fans still get the payoff they’ve been promised?
