Report: WWE Cautious About Putting Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns in New Storyline—Is There Real Heat Between Them?
The story between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns might be far from over — but fans eager for a trilogy clash could be waiting longer than expected.
Rhodes reached the pinnacle of his career at WrestleMania XL, finally “finishing the story” by defeating Reigns to become the Undisputed WWE Champion. It was a career-defining moment that capped off a two-year chase — yet a new report suggests WWE might be steering clear of putting the two megastars on-screen together anytime soon.
Behind the Curtain: Rumors of Backstage Hesitation
According to Ibou on Self Made Pro, there’s “some level of tension” surrounding Rhodes and Reigns — not necessarily personal, but creative. Sources within WWE reportedly believe someone involved doesn’t want the two on-screen together unless it directly leads to another match.
“There are people within WWE that believe somebody involved does not want Roman and Cody to be on the same screen unless they can tease a match that they’re going to deliver on,” Ibou explained.
“Right now, Cody and Roman is not scheduled. There’s a lot of hurdles there.”
Essentially, WWE doesn’t want to reignite fan demand for a third Rhodes–Reigns showdown unless they can actually follow through. As of now, no plans for that match are in motion — leaving speculation swirling about when (or if) the trilogy will happen.
The Rivalry That Defined a Generation
Rhodes vs. Reigns isn’t just a feud — it’s business history.
Their rivalry helped drive two consecutive record-breaking WrestleMania main events. Cody first challenged Roman at WrestleMania 39, where interference from The Bloodline kept the “Tribal Chief” on top. The American Nightmare’s heartbreak only fueled his story heading into the next year, as he again won the Royal Rumble and set his sights on redemption.
Originally, WWE had planned for The Rock vs. Roman Reigns, but intense fan backlash reshaped the main event scene. The Rock’s transformation into the villainous “Final Boss” set the stage for Cody’s ultimate triumph on Night Two of WrestleMania XL — where he finally dethroned Reigns in a dramatic Bloodline Rules Match, ending one of the longest world title reigns in modern history.
Since that night, the two have not crossed paths again, leaving fans hungry for the inevitable rubber match — the one that would truly cement their rivalry as an all-timer.

The Cody–Roman dynamic remains one of WWE’s biggest box-office attractions. But creative caution makes sense — once these two share the screen again, fans will demand the third and final chapter immediately. With Reigns on a reduced schedule and Cody carrying the brand as its top champion, WWE may be saving that payoff for the perfect moment — perhaps next year’s WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. Until then, the silence might just be strategic… and very profitable.
