Taz Announces Major Shoulder Surgery, Will Miss AEW Dynamite Broadcasts

AEW broadcaster and Wrestling legend Taz has announced that he will be stepping away from the commentary desk for an extended period as he prepares to undergo total shoulder replacement surgery.
The veteran commentator shared the news directly with fans via X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“I will be having total shoulder replacement surgery in a short time. Therefore I will be off AEW Dynamite for some time. See you soon.”

Taz, who has been one of AEW’s most consistent and respected voices since the early days of Dynamite, recently missed multiple shows — including AEW Dynamite and AEW Forbidden Door in August — due to ongoing medical issues. At the time, he revealed that he was undergoing a series of doctor’s appointments and imaging tests for “a couple of future surgeries,” while also noting his new knee made it difficult to travel long distances.
Before the September 3, 2025 edition of Dynamite, Taz was inducted into the 2300 Arena’s Hardcore Hall of Fame, a fitting honor for the man who helped define ECW’s original spirit in the late ’90s. Despite stepping back from travel, his presence continues to loom large both on-screen and behind the scenes at AEW.
While no official return date has been announced, fans can expect the commentary team to adjust temporarily while Taz focuses on recovery.

Taz has been one of the most authentic and sharp voices on AEW commentary since day one — combining real insight, old-school toughness, and dry humor that fans genuinely connect with. His absence will be felt, especially during Dynamite’s weekly main event coverage where his chemistry with Excalibur and Tony Schiavone often steals the show.
This surgery underscores just how much physical wear decades in the wrestling business take on the body, even years after stepping out of the ring. Here’s hoping the “Human Suplex Machine” bounces back strong and returns to the desk — orange towel and all — sooner rather than later.
