Tony Khan Speaks Out on Andrade’s AEW Status After WWE Non-Compete Reports Surface

The mystery surrounding Andrade El Idolo’s contract situation continues to swirl — and now, Tony Khan has officially addressed it.

Andrade’s name has been back in the headlines after reports emerged that he might be caught in a WWE non-compete clause following his recent release. The former AEW star returned to the company earlier this month, aligning with The Don Callis Family in what appeared to be the start of a major storyline opposite Kenny Omega. But according to new reports, fans might not see Andrade back on AEW TV for a while.

WWE’s Non-Compete Complication

According to The Wrestling Observer, TKO Group Holdings has a one-year non-compete clause that can be triggered when a performer is released for cause or breach of contract — which reportedly applies to Andrade’s situation following a wellness policy violation.

That clause could legally prevent Andrade from appearing on AEW programming, even though he’s already made his televised return. This development has created one of the most unique contract puzzles of the year — especially since Andrade only left WWE in late summer 2025 after returning there earlier in the year for a second run.

The 35-year-old made a strong impression during his WWE return, competing at the Royal Rumble and wrestling his final match at SummerSlam in a TLC match alongside Rey Fenix.

Tony Khan’s Official Response

During Thursday’s AEW WrestleDream media call, Tony Khan was asked directly about Andrade’s situation.

I have a ton of respect for Andrade El Idolo. I think he’s an amazing wrestler, and I felt that when he left AEW in 2023, he did so on a very high note,” Khan said. “Everything I said about him then still stands today. He’s great, and I’m excited to see what’s next for him.”

When pressed about whether Andrade is currently under AEW contract — or if the company is aware of any active non-compete — Khan stayed diplomatic.

“I’m saying as much as I can say,” he replied. “But I’ll reiterate that Andrade is an incredible wrestler. I’ve really enjoyed working with him in the past, and I’m excited to see what’s next for him.”

In short: Tony Khan didn’t confirm or deny Andrade’s AEW status, but his tone suggested AEW may be treading carefully while the legal situation plays out.

Wrestling.news | Backstage Take:

Behind the scenes, AEW sources reportedly remain hopeful that Andrade will be cleared to return soon — but the TKO legal department is known to enforce non-competes strictly, especially when a release involves policy breaches. AEW is said to be evaluating its options, with some insiders suggesting the company may pivot Andrade’s current storyline toward Don Callis and Kenny Omega’s growing feud while quietly waiting for the legal dust to settle.

If the one-year non-compete is enforced, Andrade could be sidelined until mid-2026, which would be a major blow considering his renewed buzz and fan support. Still, Tony Khan’s comments show respect — and likely a willingness to bring Andrade back once the situation resolves.
