With Survivor Series: WarGames just days away, the focus may be on Petco Park… but the real seeds for WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas are already being planted. And according to new reporting, WWE is preparing to use this year’s Men’s WarGames match to kick off the biggest storyline of 2026.

Nearly every top male star in the company is locked inside the double cage this weekend — and that’s not an accident.

WarGames Could Shape the Biggest Match of the Year

The Men’s WarGames match is an absurdly stacked lineup:

Team Rhodes/Punk/Reigns/Usos
vs.
Team Lesnar/Logan Paul/Breakker/Reed/McIntyre

This star power isn’t just for spectacle. It’s reportedly for storyline direction.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer revealed that WWE plans to drop meaningful hints during or immediately after the match that will help shape the WrestleMania 42 main event picture.

And the biggest name in that conversation?

Roman Reigns.

Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes… or CM Punk?

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said WWE is currently weighing several directions, all of them centered around The Tribal Chief:

“The tease on Monday was absolutely a tease for the main event… which would lead you to believe it’s Roman Reigns challenging either Cody Rhodes or Punk.”

Reigns vs. Cody has headlined two straight WrestleManias, making a third showdown a tough sell. Meltzer believes the stronger — and fresher — direction is:

Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk

A blockbuster, once-in-a-generation clash between two of the biggest names of their eras.

WarGames may deliver the first major crack in their uneasy alliance.

Where Does Seth Rollins Fit In?

Many fans expected Seth Rollins to be a top candidate for Reigns at WrestleMania 42. Their history is legendary — from The Shield to WrestleMania 31 to their modern-era rivalry.

But Rollins’ shoulder injury at Crown Jewel forced him into surgery and temporarily derailed his ascent as the leader of The Vision.

After Breakker, Reed, and Paul Heyman turned on him — writing him off TV — Rollins said he hopes to be ready by WrestleMania season… but that’s no guarantee he can compete on the big stage itself.

If Rollins recovers in time, he remains an outside option.

If not, Reigns vs. Punk or Reigns vs. Rhodes becomes the heavy favorite.

WWE Already Teasing the Road to Vegas

This all aligns with WWE’s aggressive ticket push for WrestleMania 42, which includes:

  • A brand-new event promo featuring top women’s stars
  • Individual ticket sales launching earlier than usual
  • A major marketing campaign hitting during Survivor Series weekend

WWE wants a massive main event locked in early — and WarGames might be the first domino.

Wrestling.news | Backstage Take

WWE rarely tips its hand this early, which makes this Survivor Series tease feel intentional. The tension between Cody, Punk, and Reigns is the most compelling storyline in the company — and Survivor Series puts all three in the same cage with the stakes sky-high.

If WWE really is steering toward Reigns vs. Punk, that’s a box-office main event with fresh energy and years of unresolved animosity behind it. Cody still looms as the emotional choice, but a WrestleMania 42 triple threat isn’t out of the question either.

Expect eyes, elbows, and possibly a spear or two exchanged between the champions inside WarGames. One moment — one miscommunication — could ignite the path to Allegiant Stadium.
