WWE Could Bring Back 4-Time Ex-Champion Despite Dark Past

During the WrestleMania 41 Night One pre-show, WWE stunned fans with the announcement of its acquisition of legendary Mexican promotion AAA. The deal included plans for a “Worlds Collide” crossover event between NXT and AAA talent — but that wasn’t the only buzzworthy development making rounds backstage.
Is WWE Eyeing a Del Rio Comeback?
Despite previous reports making it crystal clear that Alberto Del Rio was persona non grata in WWE circles — one insider even infamously said there was "no f*ing way**" he’d be brought back — new comments from AAA executive Ernesto Campo have stirred the pot.
In an interview with SuperLuchas, Campo claimed that Del Rio is currently expected to return to AAA programming but teased that a WWE comeback isn’t entirely off the table:
“What I know is that there are no plans for him to go to the U.S., but that could change. He is expected to return to AAA programming. Many in WWE want him back on the main roster.”
Del Rio, a four-time world champion in WWE, was once a staple of the main event scene. But since his departure, his reputation has been tainted by serious legal troubles and numerous public controversies.
A Reputation Still Under Fire
In 2020, Del Rio was arrested and charged with sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping following disturbing allegations. Though the charges were eventually dismissed after the accuser failed to appear in court, the damage to his public image has lingered. WWE has since kept its distance — until now?
If this is more than smoke, WWE may be testing the waters to gauge fan reaction — or to see whether Del Rio’s AAA performances justify a second (or third) chance.
MainEvent.News | Backstage Take
WWE is known for its comebacks, but Alberto Del Rio might be the most complicated case yet. While there’s no denying his past accolades, his off-ring baggage makes this a PR risk. If Triple H and company are seriously considering him, they’ll need to weigh the backlash against the buzz. It’s a gamble — and in the post-Vince era, WWE isn’t afraid to roll the dice.
