AEW has added brand-new gold to its growing women’s division.

Announcement Made Live on Dynamite

On last night’s episode of AEW Dynamite, AEW President Tony Khan delivered one of his signature surprises — this time unveiling the creation of the AEW Women’s Tag Team Championships. Speaking from the backstage area before the main event, Khan praised AEW as “where the best wrestle” and spotlighted the strides made by the women’s roster in 2025.

“This division made history this year,” Khan said, before revealing that it was time for the women to have their own set of tag team titles.

Khan kept details light, not specifying whether the inaugural champions would be crowned through a tournament, multi-team match, or another format. But the announcement immediately set the stage for a new era in AEW’s women’s division.

Belts Revealed Ringside

Following Khan’s announcement, Renee Paquette was shown at ringside with the brand-new championship belts in hand. The design resembles AEW’s men’s tag team titles currently held by Brodido, but with unique detailing to distinguish them as part of the women’s division.

Tag Teams in Line to Make History

AEW has quietly built out its women’s tag scene in 2025, putting more focus on duos across the roster. Teams such as Julia Hart & Skye Blue, Tay Conti & Anna Jay, Athena & Billie Starkz, Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford, Harley Cameron & Kris Statlander, and Mina Shirakawa & Toni Storm are all expected to be in the mix when the first-ever champions are crowned.

With the addition of these titles, AEW now boasts a near-complete balance between the men’s and women’s rosters: both divisions feature a world championship, a secondary title, and now tag team gold.

Women’s Division on Fire

This announcement comes at a pivotal time. At AEW All Out, Mercedes Moné retained the TBS Championship, while Kris Statlander captured her first AEW Women’s World Championship — a title she defended successfully on Dynamite just hours before Khan’s major reveal.

Wrestling.news | Backstage Take

Tony Khan’s announcement feels like the missing puzzle piece in AEW’s women’s division. After years of building credibility, the timing is right for tag team gold. The challenge now will be presentation: Will AEW crown its champions with a high-profile tournament that elevates the belts from day one? Or will the division risk the pitfalls of other companies where tag gold sometimes fades into the background? With AEW’s current roster depth, the potential is there for these titles to thrive — and for fans to see another historic chapter in women’s wrestling.
